“The Vampire Diaries” has an extraordinarily passionate fanbase. Those who were lucky enough to attend the show’s PaleyFest panel were rewarded for all of their tweeting and People’s Choice Award voting with a sneak peek at the upcoming, March 15 episode of the show, “1912” in its entirety.
Executive Producer Julie Plec begged attendees not to post spoilers on-line, calling the Saban theater a giant, “circle of trust.” The episode, which features flashbacks of the Salvatore brothers in 1912, ends with one of the show’s most shocking plot twists yet.
The panel itself focused more on affectionate banter and inside jokes among the cast members than news about the show. Plec revealed, in response to the moderator’s query about a still from the March 29 episode, “A Murder of One,” featuring a bare chested Damon (Ian Somerhalder) chained to the ceiling, “Damon does something really crappy to Rebekah [Claire Holt],” and she chains him up as payback.
Plec promised that the saga of the Originals did not end when Esther’s plot to kill all of her children failed. “What you’ve seen before hiatus was not the last of the Originals or of the mother’s plan to try to [kill them]. There’s still a whole other chapter to that story.”
Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Caroline (Candice Accola) bond as Bonnie struggles to help her mother adjust to becoming a vampire. “You’ll definitely see a lot of stuff with Caroline and Bonnie, with us together” said Graham, who praised the show for writing teenage girls who are supportive of each other rather than rivals. She also revealed that Bonnie will get a love interest later in the season.
Plec also addressed the Stefan/Elena/Damon triangle that is at the heart of the show. “We had a beautiful love story between Stefan [Paul Wesley] and Elena [Nina Dobrev]. We have a friendship, a contentious friendship, and possible romantic relationship between Damon and Elena. Damon wants to help his brother… It’s all part of the journey of growing up. What we’ll see before the end of the season is Elena having to ask herself a lot of questions… This season maybe she has a choice to make.”
Plec hinted that there will not be happy endings for all of the characters, claiming she does not know if everyone will survive the season.
Somerhalder responded to a fan query about pursuing a career in entertainment by sharing that he almost lost the role due to nerves. “I passed the studio screentest, got the network, and, [either] it was too much coffee or the B12 shot I gave myself before, I choked … Kevin Williamson said, ‘Yeah, that wasn’t good, was it?’… And he said, ‘Just go back and do what you did in the studio.’ And I did, and guess what, it wasn’t good enough. And I had to go back and retest because Les Moonves didn’t buy that I was Damon. And I wanted the job. And you know what, I went back there and [saw another auditioner] and realized, this is mine, not his, and I went in and did it, and ended up getting the call.”
