Ryan Seacrest addressed the elimination of Jermaine Jones at the top of “American Idol” tonight with the following speech.
“You know, throughout the years, this show has not been without its fair share of controversy. And tonight is no exception. With the cooperation of law enforcement, we discovered information that left us with no choice but to eliminate one of our finalists from the competition. When you’re doing a live show, anything can happen. This is ‘American Idol.'”
The speech is the first official mention of the controversy that led to Jermaine’s elimination, which stems from legal troubles and outstanding warrants that he neglected to disclose to producers. The show’s response has been highly anticipated today, and so far appears to serve double duty as both an acknowledgement of Jermaine’s departure and a self-referential hat-tip to the unpredictability of an otherwise predictable television show.
According to “Idol”s official Twitter, America will vote to eliminate another contestant tonight as usual.
Just a few minutes into the episode, Ryan said there will be more on Jermaine later. Stay tuned.
