TNT is sudsing up for its hotly anticipated remake of the classic prime-time soap “Dallas,” and if its steamy new promo is any indication, it’s going to be one of summer’s guiltiest pleasures.
The teaser pays homage to the original “Dallas” by featuring the entire cast posing in a shower with the cheeky tagline, “They’re Back, and No, You’re Not Dreaming.”
It’s a wink, of course, to the infamous Bobby Ewing Season 7 cliffhanger, in which Patrick Duffy’s character was killed off when he was fatally hit by a car, and after being dead for an entire season, Bobby pops up alive and well taking a shower in the Season 9 premiere, which revealed his death (and all of Season 8 for that matter) was just a dream that Pam (Victoria Principal) had had. It was both a brilliant and maddening plot device that infuriated fans but stands out to this day as an iconic moment in TV, rivaled only by the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger, the mother of all cliffhangers that turned a season-ending jaw-dropper into a TV tradition.
The new version — which is a continuation of the Southfork saga rather than a do-over — blends old favorites like Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Ken Kercheval and Charlene Tilton with the next generation of stars, like Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe and Jordana Brewster, who play the Ewing dynasty’s offspring. That hybrid casting maneuver hopes to bring in new and old fans alike. It didn’t work for The CW’s quickly canceled reboot of “Melrose Place,” but “Dallas” seems to have a lot more going for it (did we mention J.R. is back???).
The original “Dallas” series, a TV treasure from the glory days of prime-time soaps, ran on CBS from 1978 to 1991.
The new “Dallas” premieres with a two-hour opener on Wednesday, June 13, at 9/8c on TNT. For more TNT summer premiere dates, including info on the final episodes of “The Closer,” CLICK HERE.
