Next week as you awaken from a long night’s slumber, turning on the TV, rubbing your eyes, groggy and confused, know that yes, that is Katie Couric hosting … “Good Morning America.”
ABC announced Thursday that the former “Today Show” host will be a guest co-host all next week on her old show’s morning rival, “GMA.” Couric will appear next to George Stephanopoulos beginning Monday, as she fills in for the vacationing Robin Roberts.
Couric seems excited about returning to morning television, even if it’s just for a brief stint (and for an old competitor).
“Rise + shine! Excited to be back on morning TV next wk, guest hosting @GMA w/ @GStephanopoulos. #KatieOnGMA” Couric wrote on Twitter.
So what do Couric’s former “Today” cohorts think about this news? There were a lot of shocked faces in the “Today” newsroom when the announcement came out, according to Fox News.
“There were a lot of jaws dropping all over the place,” one staffer told Fox News. “Then there was a lot of sniping.”
Couric co-hosted the “Today Show” for 15 years before leaving the network in 2006 to anchor the “CBS Evening News.” She left that post last year and has a new ABC daytime talk show on deck. “Katie” debuts September 10 and is pegged as the next great hope to replace Oprah Winfrey as the queen of daytime.
The “GMA” stunt is the latest in ABC’s Couric blitz, which also included a front-row seat in the ballroom Tuesday night. Couric appeared on “DWTS,” where quick-witted host Tom Bergeron got some giggles at Couric’s expense, joking about her grabbing his butt. The episode is below.
