“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”
HBO’s epic adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” finally returns with the highly anticipated Season 2 premiere, this Sunday, April 1st, at 9/8c on HBO — and in case you haven’t heard, War is coming!
As a quick refresher before we begin the next chapter of the tale (based on “A Clash of Kings”), we thought we’d revisit the best OMG moments from last season, listed below — with a few new teaser clips about what we can look forward to this season.
The Top 5 Most Shocking Moments From Season 1:
1. Ned’s Dead!
We knew heads would roll when honest-to-a-fault Ned (Sean Bean) figured out the hateful Joffrey wasn’t the real heir to King Robert’s throne, but who knew it would happen so literally? After being forced to lie and named a traitor, Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North and Hand of the King, is beheaded. In front of his children. A “Game” changer, indeed.
2. The Golden Crown
Vindictive Viserys Targaryen finally got the crown he so yearned for, but in another very literal scene, Daenerys’ older brother met his end when her new hubby, the barbaric Khal Drogo, poured a molten pot of gold over Viserys’ head! That’s what you get for horsing around with your ridiculous demands, blondie!

3. The Incestuous Twins
Sure, twins are close and all, but Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) and her brother Jaime Lannister take it a step too far. And the lusty siblings take another outlandish step to protect their dirty little secret when Ned Stark’s young son Bran accidentally catches them getting it on — Jaime throws the tyke out of a tower window. (He lives, albeit crippled.) Who saw that coming!?

4. Breastfeeding a Grown Child
Okay, so maybe food was hard to come by in these medieval times, even among the Seven Kingdoms, but there’s still no excuse for this one. Ned’s wife, Lady Catelyn Stark, and her prisoner, the dwarf Tyrion Lannister (the oh-so-enjoyable to watch Peter Dinklage), pay a visit to Lysa Arryn, widow to the first Hand of the King (also offed by Cersei, I might add), who is sitting on a throne and breastfeeding a boy who looks to be around 10 years old. Because when that boy then unlatches, stomps his feet and demands the death of Tyrion, he’s clearly old enough for some steak.
5. Perhaps the Most Shocking Moment of Season 1 — next to beheaded Ned, of course — was hatched in the Season 1 finale. The bewitching Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who now considers herself the rightful ruler of Westeros, has a fire-breathing new friend in her arsenal for the fight for the throne, after emerging from the fire with a baby dragon on her shoulder. And now that she’s lost her Dothraki husband and her child, she’s even more pissed off and determined.
