“This cheap stunt was not my idea by the way…”
That was former co-host Meredith Vieira joking on the “Today” show this morning, where she made a “big announcement.”
After teasing all weekend that a “Today” show “legend” would be returning this week, NBC revealed Monday morning that it was Meredith (more of a “Today” show favorite but we digress). It was clearly a gimmick timed to counter former “Today” anchor Katie Couric’s highly publicized guest hosting stint this week on “Today’s” rival “GMA,” along with NBC scheduling lightening rod Sarah Palin Tuesday as guest “Today” co-host.
But back to Vieira’s news:
“I’m going to be joining you all for the Olympics in London and I’m very excited,” she revealed.
Vieira will be co-hosting the opening ceremonies along with Matt Lauer and Bob Costas. “I’m also going to give people a bit of the flair and flavor of the host country,” she added.
In her five years on “Today” (Vieira co-hosted with Lauer from 2006-2011), covering the Olympics was her very favorite experience during her time on the show, Meredith said.
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London begin Friday, July 27 on NBC.

The morning show wars are heating up this week: Besides Couric on ABC, and Meredith and Sarah Palin on NBC, CBS did their part today with Gayle King interviewing her bestie, Oprah Winfrey, who discussed her “101 Mistakes” launching her OWN channel.
