Melissa Gilbert’s fellow “Dancing with the Stars” competitor Gavin DeGraw — who carried the star to the red room after her collapse from a mild concussion and whiplash –- has revealed what happened behind the scenes during the dramatic incident.
After the former “Little House on the Prairie” star performed the Paso Doble with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Monday night, “She was woozy” backstage right after her dance, Gavin told Xfinitytv. “There were a few of us gathered around her because we were really concerned and so we got her some ice because it seemed like she had hit the back of her head. I guess she may have hit the floor at some point during the dance. We put an ice pack on her head.”
The singer, who dances with Karina Smirnoff, said, “I wasn’t sure how she was because she kept saying ‘my head hurts. I don’t feel well.’ I said, ‘hey, maybe you want to lay down.’ I carried her down the steps and I asked if there was somewhere I could lay her down [and] in the red room, there was a bench so I took her down there and I let her lay down there and the paramedic was there and took care of her.”

As Xfinitytv has previously reported, Melissa was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance. On Monday night, the actress tweeted: “I’m alright. Mild concussion and whiplash. Very soon I will be safely home resting and being taken care of.” As Melissa told “DWTS” fans last week during personal story time, she broke her back in 2010 while doing “Little House on the Prairie: The Musical” but fully recovered.
Although Melissa was apparently hurt during her Monday night dance, she showed no signs of it on camera, earning a decent score of 22 and having judge Carrie Ann Inaba declare it her best dance yet.
Karina, who performed the tango with Gavin later in the evening, recalled to reporters later that all the drama happened out of the public eye: “She felt really light-headed and dizzy. She was too weak to walk.”
Melissa expressed gratitude to both Gavin and Maks via Twitter, writing on Monday night, “Maksim C you are my champion. I adore you. Gavin DeGraw bless your heart for carrying me down those stairs.”
Meanwhile, Melissa’s fellow competitors expressed concern. “We’re worried,” said pro Derek Hough, who dances with TV hostess Maria Menounos. “For her to be in a stretcher is pretty terrifying.”
