Whoopi Goldberg Defends Use of the N-Word on ‘The View’

Whoopi Goldberg on "The View" (ABC)

Nobody can deny that Whoopi Goldberg is a woman who speaks her mind, and when it comes to the n-word, she’s not afraid to get bleeped for it.

When discussing CNN’s recent decision to use the full n-word when quoting others, Whoopi came to the defense of the cable news giant, with the support of  Barbara Walters on Tuesday’s episode of “The View

“If you are quoted, you should be able to [say it], but even now, I’m having trouble,” admitted Walters (see below).

“What reporters do is report the news, and every time you make it ‘the n-word,’ it’s cute,” added Goldberg. “I feel very strongly about the word. Do not eliminate it; it’s part of our history… Let’s call it what it is.”

“Do you call it what it is?” asked Walters.

“Yes, I call it what it is. I say n***** and they bleep me,” said Goldberg.

This isn’t the first time the show’s hosts have addressed their feelings about the use of racial epithets in recent months; Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters got into a heated debate over the use of the n-word this October.

When quoting then-presidential hopeful Hermain Cain, Walters used the word, drawing criticism from her co-host. “I didn’t like the way you said it,” Shepherd told Walters. “I don’t know if it’s a semantics thing, but it’s something that goes through my body.”
