UPDATE: “Today” has no axe to grind with Kathy Griffin. The show has released a statement denying Griffin’s claims she was banned. “The idea that TODAY show anchors and hosts ban guests from appearing on the show is silly,” the statement reads [via USA Today]. “There was no incident between Natalie and Kathy at the Golden Globes or anywhere else. In fact Natalie is a big fan of Kathy’s.”
PREVIOUSLY: Serial offender Kathy Griffin reveals she’s been “re-banned” from “The Today Show,” after an alleged tiff with the morning show’s news anchor Natalie Morales.
In an interview about her new Bravo talk show, launching this Thursday at 10/9c, Griffin tells USA Today that she won’t be promoting “Kathy” on “Today” and here’s why.
“I just found out, I’m very excited, I’m re-banned from the Today show,” Griffin says to USA Today. “I just want you to know, over the years since Suddenly Susan in 1996, I have been banned and re-banned from the Today show by several people. Katie Couric at one point. Matt Lauer at one point. This time my camp heard that it was actually Natalie Morales.”
So, what’s Natalie’s beef with Kathy?
“What I heard from their team is that I was rude to her at the Golden Globes. Which is funny because I didn’t go to the Golden Globes,” Griffin says. “But I did go to Golden Globes parties which I didn’t really belong at, so I know for a fact that I did a few interviews there, but I really knew that it wasn’t my place to even be there.”
Watch an Outtake From “Kathy”:
Griffin claims she doesn’t recall seeing Morales at the Globes parties but says she does know her from when they both appeared together on “The Marriage Ref.”
But in time, perhaps Morales may come around, as her fellow “Today” colleagues have where Griffin is concerned. Kathy’s back in the good graces of both Couric (“we email”) and Lauer, who’s now “over her crap,” and finally gets that, “Ok, it’s a joke, she’s kidding.’”
The outspoken celebrity basher almost takes pride in her banishments over the years: In addition to “Today,” Griffin has also been banned from “The View,” David Letterman, and CNN, who swears her off every year due to Griffin’s potty-mouth antics co-hosting New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper…but every year she’s back.
“Kathy” premieres April 19 at 10/9c on Bravo.
