‘Today’: Madonna Admits She Needs to Be a ‘Tougher Mom’

Madonna may still reign supreme as the Queen of Pop, but when it comes to her life at home, Madge doesn’t always rule with an iron fist.

“We all have our challenges,” Madonna said in an interview with Harry Smith that aired on Wednesday’s “Today” show. “To be a single mother of four and to work as much as I do, with my life in a kind of metaphorical fish bowl, it’s pretty challenging.”

Out of the spotlight, Madge said she is a typical inquisitive, and occasionally nitpicky mom, posing questions like, “Have you done your homework?” and “Why are you wearing that?” But with a busy schedule, she admits she could be better at discipline. “I’m probably not as tough as I should be,” she said. “I think I need to be maybe tougher.”

A wake-up call came in the form of photos which recently surfaced of her 15-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon smoking a cigarette.

Madonna admitted she “wasn’t very happy” with the pics, adding, “Every day is a negotiation, but cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of.”  When Smith asked what kind of example she set by smoking in a new music video, she quipped, “That was just a prop.”
