Olivia Benson isn’t exactly known for her soft side. But during an appearance on Wednesday’s “Ellen,” Mariska Hargitay, who plays the hard-nosed “Law & Order: SVU” detective, became emotional while discussing her three children.
Late last year, Hargitay and husband Peter Hermann adopted two babies: a daughter Amaya, and shortly thereafter, a son named Andrew. (Hargitay and Hermann also have a five-year-old son named August.)
“We got a call out of nowhere from our lawyer who said, ‘We have this amazing little boy and this amazing opportunity,'” Hargitay told DeGeneres. “It was just one of those things that we were not expecting at all, and my husband and I looked at each other and have never been more sure about anything and knew it was just right.”
DeGeneres asked how long it took between receiving the phone call and being able to take Andrew home.
“Well, with my son it was a different story,” Hargitay explained. “It was very different with my son it all happened very quickly and that’s not usually how it happens. I would say usually, [adopting a child] takes the same about of time it takes for a baby to grow in your belly.
“With [Amaya] it took months and months and with [Andrew] it was — truth be told, it was two days,” she continued.
Hargitay said welcoming two infants in a year was “nothing shy of a miracle.”
“This year has been a year of true blessings,” she added, welling up with tears. “Way to make me cry Ellen!”
