Nigel Lythgoe, the mastermind producer behind “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” is launching another music reality show, but this time, it’s not a competition.
There aren’t any judges either. In “Opening Act,” premiering this summer on E!, Lythgoe and Mary J. Blige surprise people chosen from the Internet with a chance to become the next opening act for such stars as Nicki Minaj, Brad Paisley and Rod Stewart.

Nigel popped up on “The Today Show” Monday to explain.
