She helps bring laughs to millions each week on “Modern Family,” but behind the scenes, Sarah Hyland has been quietly dealing with something very serious.

Hyland, 21, has had a lifelong battle with kidney dysplasia and underwent a kidney transplant on April 13, the actress reveals in the new issue of Seventeen. She also discussed her private struggle Monday on “Good Morning America.”

The actress’s father Edward James Hyland donated the kidney to his daughter, an experience that’s bonded her family even more.

“You know that family is always going to be there for you – no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!” she tells the magazine. “It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”

She continued, “I have a second chance at life – not a lot of people get that.”

Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom, will use the show’s summer hiatus to recover from the surgery.
