Disaster struck for “Dancing with the Stars” frontrunner Katherine Jenkins when she injured her back during her salsa routine on Monday night. The singer sought medical care after the show and later tweeted that her doctor said “it was a reflectorical spasm in my lower back.” But it was left unclear was how the injury would affect Katherine’s run on the show.
The singer was teary-eyed and in obvious pain after a bad move at the end of an otherwise terrific performance with partner Mark Ballas.
After the stumble, Katherine couldn’t make it to her usual post-show press interviews, so Mark had to explain to reporters how their salsa took a turn for the worse.
“I just watched it back [on video] and to me it looks like a foot slipped and then her back kind of tweaked a little bit,” he said. “But she’s fine. She can move; there’s no break; there’s no muscle tears or anything ‘cause she can move, so that’s a good sign.”

Still, he said, “I’m concerned about her health. This is a dance show. I want her to be okay and at the end I was supposed to land way to her right but what happens is my hand is hooked around her neck as I’m leaping over and I felt her slip so I slid myself underneath and stood her up so she didn’t fall and I gashed up my knee pretty bad doing that but as long as she can stay on her feet, that’s all I cared about.”
After a season of mostly great dancing, Katherine has suddenly become accident-prone. Last week, the UK star danced with part of her costume tangled around her foot after a wardrobe malfunction. But the judges didn’t mark her down for that incident and she survived elimination.
Mark wasn’t sure how the new problem would affect voting. “I really don’t know. Hopefully [people] liked what we did because it was feeling great up ‘til [the ending]. In my mind, I was like, yeah. And in dress rehearsal, we made zero mistakes in that dance every time we ran it and this morning, when we had a rehearsal, I said, ‘This will be the one for you. It’s going to be your breakout dance.’ ”
Through most of the performance, Mark’s vision held true. “The dance was great. She did really well, nice rotation, lots of rhythm. [She showed] a different side of her, for sure.” But judges had to mark the couple down to 27 out of a possible 30 because of the bobble. “We lost three points in the end,” Mark sighed.
The longtime “DWTS” pro told xfinityTV Katherine didn’t make use of the show’s famous ambulance, which had whisked Melissa Gilbert to the hospital earlier this season. “None of that, no ambulances. We’re fine.”
Mark added, “She’s been one of the best partners I’ve had on the show. She should be taking a shot at the mirror ball but I don’t know how it’s going to go now. [But] she’s dusting it off. She’s not being a baby; she’s tough.”
