The stars of NBC’s “Community” have turned to Twitter to express their feelings and reactions to the ousting of their show’s executive producer and leading light, Dan Harmon.
As we reported earlier, Harmon — by his own admission — was fired from the show and won’t be back for its fourth season next fall.
That news, which broke earlier this weekend, is being greeted with sadness by “Community” cast members Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash. The Hollywood Reporter rounded up their Tweets in this story.
“You gave me the role of a lifetime & three of the best years of my life,” Tweeted McHale. “Dan Harmon is a genius,” Tweeted Brie.
It was just Saturday that Harmon himself reacted to stories that he was being replaced as “Community” showrunner by two outside sitcom writers. “I got fired,” he wrote, in a very candid statement he posted on his own Tumblr page, according to this story on The Hollywood Reporter Web site.
The first stories about his exit from the show said he’ll be replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port, described as TV writers whose most recent gig was in the role of consultants on the ABC sitcom “Happy Endings.”
The news of Harmon’s exit from “Community” came just days after NBC announced its new lineup for next fall, which includes a 13-episode commitment to a fourth season of “Community” and a move from Thursday nights to Fridays.
Last week, amidst uncertainty about Harmon’s future, NBC’s top programming exec, Bob Greenblatt, said that if Harmon leaves the sitcom, he’ll still be available as a consultant. In his Tumblr statement, Harmon ridiculed that notion.
Why was he let go? No official reason for Harmon’s parting is being reported, leaving observers to speculate that a combination of factors led to his departure, including: His very public spat with series star Chevy Chase this spring, in which the two traded insults with each other and the jibes went public. In addition, “Community,” though apparently revered by some, continued to struggle in the ratings this past season — so much so that its renewal was in doubt almost until the last minute.
Chase was not among the “Community” stars who came forward to thank or praise Harmon on Sunday.
