Summer staple “So You Think You Can Dance” returns for a ninth season tonight with several big changes. Chief among them are a new condensed format (now eliminations and performances will air in one show), and a double dose of winners — one male, one female. What remains the same is the sheer volume of odd and impressive talent, including a man named the Exorcist, who gives an at once terrifying and mesmerizing audition in the clip above. Although everyone knows Mary Murphy is prone to emotionalism, it’s not every day that a dance brings the hot tamale train to a screeching, teary-eyed halt. In a recent call with reporters [via the New York Post], judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe admitted the Exorcist, “removed my soul, took it into his body, cleansed it and, thank God, gave it to me back afterward,” adding, “I felt a little better, I must be honest.” Take a look at the performance above and set your DVR to record tonight’s “SYTYCD” season premiere at 8/7c on FOX.
