Kathie Lee Gifford could probably just die of embarrassment after making a very awkward mistake on the “Today” show Wednesday morning.
While interviewing Martin Short, who was promoting his new movie “Madagascar 3,” Gifford noted that, “You and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?”
Kathie Lee unfortunately missed the memo. Sadly, Short’s wife, Nancy Dolan, died two years ago after a battle with ovarian cancer. (Oops!)
Caught completely off guard and looking appropriately horrified, Short stammered, “we, uh, 36 years….”
“But you’re still, like, in love,” she marveled obliviously about the couple, who had three children together. “Madly in love,” Short quietly responded.
Clearly, painfully unaware of his wife’s passing, Gifford went on, “And you still make each other laugh.”

Later in the day after learning of the gaffe, Gifford wrote on Twitter: “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
