‘Hondo’ is so “perfect” a John Ford western that many people assume it was directed by John Ford–or at the very least, Andrew McLaglen. Actually the director was suspense expert John Farrow, who worked with the “Duke” only twice in his career. In ‘Hondo,’ John Wayne plays a hard-bitten cavalry scout who is humanized by frontierswoman Geraldine Page and her young son (Lee Aaker, ‘Rin Tin Tin’). Try as he might, Wayne can’t convince Page to move off her land in anticipation of an Apache attack. He leaves her ranch, only to be ambushed by desperado Leo Gordon–who happens to be Page’s long-absent husband. Having killed Gordon, Hondo returns to the ranch to protect Page from the Indians, and to rekindle the woman’s hesitant love for him. The climactic attack sequence is enhanced by Hondo’s 3-D photography, one of the few truly effective utilizations of this much-maligned process. Buy the Blu-ray right here.

Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson

Niall Ferguson, internationally acclaimed author and historian, brings you the highly anticipated documentary series ‘Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson.’ Named by Time magazine as one of their top 100 most influential people, Ferguson investigates the influence of the West and its hold over the rest of the world since 1500 A.D. The way people live – or aspire to live – is unmistakably an invention of the West. All over the world, more and more humans eat a Western diet, wear Western clothes and live in Western housing. The religion exported by the West, Christianity, is still followed by a third of mankind. But are we living through the beginning of the end of the West’s ascendancy? In this remarkable series, Niall Ferguson explains how by juxtaposing the West and ‘the Rest’, we can uncover the keys – the six killer applications – of Western ascendancy: Competition, Science, Democracy, Medicine, Consumerism, and Work Ethic. These keys may hold the real explanation of how, for roughly five centuries, a clear minority of mankind managed to secure the lion’s share of the Earth´s resources. Buy the DVD right here.

Half a Hero

Audiences always roared with delight when Red Skelton went one-on-one with post-war life in The Yellow Cab Man, The Fuller Brush Man and other films. In ‘Half a Hero,’ the legendary comic took on a slice of 20th-century Americana that still resonates today: the suburbs. Red plays Ben Dobson, a magazine writer whose boss approves of Ben because he lives in a cramped Manhattan apartment instead of “the slums of tomorrow”: the ‘burbs. So, of course, when Ben movies his family to a sprawling housing development, he struggles (hilariously_ to keep the fact a secret. Jean Hagen, a year after her iconic portrayal of the itsy-voiced screen siren in Singin’ in the Rain, plays Ben’s long-suffering wife, and singer Polly Bergen makes a guest appearance with a torrid nightclub-scene rendition of “Love.” Buy the DVD at

Felix Farmer’s (Richard Mulligan) latest movie flops – and lots of Hollywood types spring into action in ‘S.O.B.‘ Agents are called. Lawyers are retained. Statements are issued. It’s what master comedy director Blake Edwards calls “Standard Operating Bull,” the subject of his gleefully satiric S.O.B. Julie Andrews is a wholesome superstar about to alter her image…radically. Aiding and abetting the madness are William Holden, Robert Preston, Robert Vaughn, Shelley Winters, Loretta Swit and more. Dialogue crackles like fat in a fire, gags range from dead-on deadpan to comedic broadsides, insights bristle and sting. Nothing standard here: S.O.B. is extraordinary. Buy the DVD at
