Tom Cruise is about to turn 50 (on July 3), but in his new movie “Rock of Ages,” he plays a younger, hard-muscled heavy-metal rock star. And to do this movie musical — his first-ever musical, by the way — he has to sing and dance like a rock star too.
So, as he always does to prepare for a movie, Cruise went all out, training for more than nine hours a day with vocal and dance instructors until he felt he was ready.
You can judge the results — or a small portion of them — in the above clip from Friday night’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC. In the second of Cruise’s two guest segments on the show, Leno presented a clip from “Rock of Ages” in which Cruise, as fictional rocker Stacee Jaxx, performs Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me” before a crowd of screaming fans. Cruise also revealed that he had some special guests on the set that day to watch him perform — the members of Def Leppard.
Cruise and Leno talked about how Cruise — who’s not exactly known for any musical ability — came to be cast in the movie. Even Cruise admitted he had no musical background, which is why he threw himself into training for the role.
He’s a guy who’s known for this kind of commitment to his roles. For example, in their first segment, Leno and Cruise talked about last year’s “Mission Impossible” movie, in which Cruise did his own stunts. That was the movie where Cruise had to leap out of a high window of the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai skyscraper that is the world’s tallest building, and scramble around the exterior of it.
Leno showed a clip from that movie too — a scene we’ve seen before, and yet it never ceases to amaze.
