American Idol” winner and country music queen Carrie Underwood announced in an interview that she is a strong supporter of gay marriage.

The devout Christian boasts a country music audience that trends conservative, but made the declaration in an interview with British newspaper The Independent.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” she said. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

She stated that her Christian values made her more open to social and legal tolerance, rather than opposed to it.

“Our church is gay friendly,” she said. “Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

Her announcement prompted a strong show of support from fellow country royalty Miley Cyrus, who took to Twitter to voice her approval, tweeting, “I think it would be amazing if @carrieunderwood posed for @NOH8Campaign Would be wonderful to get that kinda support from country music!”
