Regis Philbin came on David Letterman’s “Late Show” all set to talk about his recent guest-starring appearance on “Hot in Cleveland,” when Dave surprised him with a pointed question about 90-year-old Betty White.

Right after Regis, 80, raised the subject of the TV Land sitcom, Dave asked him: “Did you and Betty ever get it on? Because I know a lot of people did!”

As you might detect if you watch the video, above, the comment didn’t go over well with the “Late Show” studio audience, whose murmuring signaled their disapproval. Regis gamely parried the question, though. “What a terrible thing to say!” he said to Dave. “Poor Betty White — all these years a part of this business [since 1949, as a matter of fact].”

“You know what I think?” Regis asked Dave. “I think you’re very, very jealous — it could have been [you playing] the hair stylist!”

On “Hot in Cleveland,” Regis played a flamboyant hairdresser named Pierre. “He’s supposed to be gay,” Regis explained. “Nobody knows if he’s gay or not gay.”

To which Dave replied: “Well, people say the same about you!”

The two then talked about Regis’ appearance on Dave’s show last year, when Regis was departing his long-time morning show. On “Late Show,” Dave gave Regis a gift — a bright red Vespa motor scooter — which Regis then proceeded to crash when he attempted to drive it down Broadway outside of the Ed Sullivan Theater.

In this next clip, Regis explained why that happened:
