ABC’s making way for “Katie.”

As has been speculated for months, Katie Couric‘s syndicated daytime talk show is inheriting the weekdays at 3 p.m. timeslot (in most markets) when it debuts this September, ABC announced Tuesday.

That means “General Hospital” is checking out of the 3 p.m. slot it’s held for decades and will now air at 2 p.m./ET, beginning Monday, Sept. 10.

Deep Soap: Daytime Stars Sound Off

One of the sole survivors left in the soap genre, “GH” was renewed for another year and will celebrate its 50th anniversary on the air on April 1, 2013. That makes it the longest-running soap opera currently in production.

“GH” was also the big winner at last weekend’s 2012 Daytime Emmy Awards — the program was nominated for 23 awards and took home five — more than any other show. For more on the Upsets, First-Time Winners and No-Shows at the Daytime Emmys, click here.
