OWN’s Lisa Ling Has ‘Issues’ With Oprah’s Kardashians Interview

Lisa Ling (OWN)

During a recent appearance on “Access Hollywood Live,” Lisa Ling admits that she was a bit disappointed that Oprah Winfrey took a dip in the shallow end and interviewed the Kardashian clan for a two-part episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” as The Hollywood Reporter notes.

It’s a fair-but-bold assertion, considering Ling has her own show, “Our America,” on Winfrey’s network.

“I had my issues with the Kardashians, absolutely,” Ling said. “I think there’s so much wrong with how they are the most revered family in the country, but they are, nevertheless. So I get why Oprah wanted to interview them. I mean, they are icons in pop culture right now.”

“People are interested in what they think about things for some strange reason,” she added.

Indeed, people are interested: The second Kardashian episode pulled in 1.2 million viewers, making it the third most-watched broadcast to date on OWN.

But apparently Oprah seems to dig the Kardashians just as much as the rest of America: Oprah’s even agreed to appear on their E! show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”

But, hey, don’t think the Kardashians are just superficial rich people who broadcast their lives on TV. They can be deep too — take a look at the spiritual side of Khloe and Lamar.

Ling is certainly entitled to her opinion on the subject, but she also made it a point to say how grateful she is to Winfrey for allowing her to do the kind of journalism she loves to do, like her recent episode on teen mothers.

“I don’t even think I’d be able to do this kind of work on a news network, because now news has become so loud and obnoxious, but Oprah has given me a chance to do this documentary series,” Ling said. “I really don’t think I’d be able to do this work elsewhere, so I’m really grateful for this opportunity.”
