Even though he occasionally loses it, Charlie Sheen still has it.
The former “Two and a Half Men” star’s much-buzzed about return to TV in FX’s “Anger Management” debuted to record-breaking ratings.
Thursday night’s series premiere drew 5.5 million total viewers, making it the most-watched sitcom premiere on cable (excluding children’s programming). Those numbers grew to 5.7 million for the second episode that immediately followed. The program also clocked 2.65 million viewers in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
“Anger Management” now also ranks as the most-watched series premiere in FX history. The extra eyeballs on the cable network also helped boost the season premieres of “Wilfred” and “Louie” that aired behind it.
Russell Brand’s new late-night series, “Brand X,” also debuted Thursday night, drawing 1.1 million total viewers at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
The curiosity factor played a significant role in Sheen fans turning out to see Charlie’s next act, so the test will be to see how many come back next week. Still, it’s a good sign for the comedy, which has received mixed reviews from critics, and must have FX execs wiping their brows with a phew!
Betting on Sheen was certainly a gamble, and if their winning! formula leads to continued ratings success, the show will go on. “Management’s” unique production deal stipulates that only if the first 10 episodes are a success, then 90 more will be produced over the next two years.
