Top Five: Kimmel Announces, Mocks Emmys in His PJs

It was a day of tears and cheers (depending on who was nominated and who was not), and for Jimmy Kimmel, it was another serendipitous leap to national prominence.

It was, of course, the Emmy nomination announcements on Thursday, which Jimmy handled with Kerry Washington, star of “Scandal” on ABC. Jimmy wore pajamas, she wore regular clothes.

1) Well, it was 5:30 in the morning: And Jimmy was apparently a last-minute replacement for Nick Offerman of “Parks and Recreation” on NBC who was scheduled to be co-announcer with Washington. But he was hung up in New York’s inclement weather Wednesday evening and his flight was either delayed or cancelled outright. So Jimmy, who’s normally a night owl, turned up at 5:30 a.m. (if not before), California time, to sub for Offerman. The pajamas were a nice, funny touch. And Jimmy, who’s due to host the Emmys in September, got an Emmy nomination, to boot.

Here’s what he had to say about that, still wearing pajamas:

2) Make it work, designers! So says Tim Gunn on “Project Runway,” which has been making it work for nine seasons, and just started its 10th Thursday night on Lifetime. We watched the show (we admit it: We’ve liked this reality-competition show since the very beginning) and found ourselves rooting for Long Islander Christopher Palu, an earnest 24-year-old from Massapequa (yes, trivia fans, that’s where Alec and the other Baldwins grew up). And lo and behold, Christopher won the first challenge of the season Thursday night. Chalk one up for LI.

Here’s a look at Christopher, and how he made it on to “Project Runway”:

3) The price was right for Aaron Paul: We liked watching “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” this week. The actor, who plays bad-ass Jesse on the AMC series, told Jay about his early life in L.A. as he struggled to break into show business. Among other gigs, he was a contestant on “The Price is Right.” And Jay even had the video.

4) A tragedy’s sudden impact: By Friday morning, Emmy nominations and late-night hijinks had given way to sadness as all the morning shows, and indeed all the news channels all day long, carried news of the Colorado movie theater shooting. In this next clip from “The Today Show,” Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie interview an eyewitness to the carnage who gives them some shocking details of the massacre.

5) Zimmerman gives an interview: The other TV news “highlight” of the week was Sean Hannity’s interview with Trayvon Martin’s accused killer, George Zimmerman, on Fox News Channel. We don’t have the interview, but we have portions of it, in this NBC News report.
