U.S. Olympic soccer star Hope Solo is making new claims about her former “Dancing with the Stars” partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy in her new memoir.
When the two were paired together last year on Season 13, tensions and tempers were high throughout the intense competition, where there were rumors that things got physical. The couple brushed off the reports at the time, but now Solo is talking about it in her book, Solo: A Memoir of Hope, out August 14.
Solo, 31, accuses Chmerkovskiy, 32, of “slapping me across the face. Hard.” The incident occurred while Maks was correcting one of Hope’s dance moves. She also describes how Maks, who’s known as the “Bad Boy of the Ballroom,” was often rough with her during practice.
“He manhandled me in rehearsals from the start, pushing me, whacking my stomach, bending my arms roughly. I thought that was just how it went — how dancers worked with each other,” Solo writes. “But it kept getting worse. One day, Maks was trying to put me in a certain position and hit my stomach so hard with his open palm that I had a red handprint there for the rest of the day.”
After the physical altercation, Maks “was extremely apologetic,” Solo says. She also reveals that ABC offered to remove Maks from the show and give her a different dance partner but she declined, saying she “didn’t want to end Maks’ career.”
Chmerkovskiy has yet to formally comment on the accusations but did write a cryptic message Thursday on Twitter: “Always hated hypocrites and liars…but when someone is both AND an opportunist, I just feel bad for them. Can’t win at someone’s expense.”
