Katie Couric says she’s been spending her summer getting ready for the launch of her syndicated afternoon talk show, “Katie” — including touring the country to visit the stations that will carry her show, and taping a number of intriguing segments.

Among them: Linking up with “Margaritaville” singer Jimmy Buffett to perform as one of his back-up singers during an actual performance, and riding in a race car with racer Danica Patrick.

On Wednesday’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Katie presented a clip of her performance with Buffett that you gotta see (above).

We loved her performance, and we also were interested when she and Jay talked some “inside baseball” about network television. This was when she talked about her visits to the affiliate stations carrying her show. She explained that this kind of diplomacy is very important because these local stations are responsible for promoting her talk show in their local markets, which includes investing millions in advertising, both on their own air and in the marketplace (mainly for outdoor ads — billboards, bus ads, bus stop posters and the like).

Jay agreed that these relationships are important. In fact, ever the salesman, Leno has long practiced strong diplomacy with the managers at NBC’s affiliate stations, and it has probably contributed, in some measure, to his longevity.

“Katie” premieres Monday, Sept. 10. Check local listings.
