Nothing makes “Grey’s Anatomy” fans crazier than weddings. Whether it was Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) post-it wedding, Christina (Sandra Oh) and Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) rushed, ill-advised nuptials, or Alex (Justin Chambers) and Izzie’s (Katherine Heigl) impulsive ceremony, whenever two characters walk down the aisle, the audience always seems divided about whether the event lived up to their expectations. Season nine, which premieres September 27, will feature another couple getting married. Showrunner Shonda Rhimes told TVLine, “We are going to have a wedding this season. But that’s all I’m going to say.”
Given that most of the show’s signature couples are already married, and that season eight ended with many of the characters near death from a plane crash, the show’s marital options seem limited. Here are the suspects.
Bailey and Ben
Take-charge surgeon Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and anesthesiologist turned surgical intern Ben (Jason George) got engaged at the end of last season. It would make sense for them to get married now. However, Ben’s plan to move out of state for his surgical training, a lack of audience interest in their relationship, and the Grey’s rule that expected marriages rarely happen all argue for their engagement being a red herring.
Jackson and April
Adult virgin April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams, AKA the man who should have been cast as Finnick) memorably had sex — twice — during their surgical boards exams. April felt guilty and decided that Jesus hated her while much of the audience felt that losing your virginity to a man who looks like Jesse Williams is a sign that God really, really loves you. Getting married would ease her conscience. Since it’s unlikely that there were any condoms available in that bathroom, there’s also the possibility that April is pregnant. There is no way Kempner would have a baby out of wedlock. On the other hand, they don’t seem to be in love.
Christina and Owen
Yes, they’re already married. But they separated over his infidelity. Christina was ready to take a position at another hospital. The plane crash and unrelated departure of cardiac surgeon Teddy (Kim Raver) presumably will keep her at Seattle Grace. If she and Owen reunite, they might decide to celebrate their second chance at love with another ceremony.
Callie and Arizona
The couple had a big, traditional wedding. But with Washington state recently legalizing gay marriage, it would make sense for lesbian co-parents Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) to avail themselves of all the legal protections that come with government recognition and head down to City Hall for a marriage license.
Lexie and Mark
Lexie (Chyler Leigh) died in the plane crash. With Eric Dane also leaving the show, it seems likely that he is a goner as well. The show that brought us Dead Denny might treat us to a heavenly wedding for the starcrossed couple. Yes, it would be cheesy, but it could be cheesily awesome. Or, Mark could survive, head to Los Angeles, and marry his former love Addison (Kate Walsh) on “Private Practice.”
