Pop songstresses will face off for at least one night as talent-show judges following NBC’s decision to schedule an episode of “The Voice” to compete directly against an episode of “The X Factor” on Fox.

And it’s not just any episode of “The X Factor” — it’s the season premiere featuring new judge Britney Spears. NBC’s move, announced Wednesday, will pit Brit against Christina Aguilera of “The Voice” in a rare battle of pop-star judges.

The intersection of the two stars is being made possible as both NBC and Fox try and make the most of their two big fall talent-competitions by premiering their new seasons over multiple evenings.

Thus, “The Voice” will “premiere” over three nights — Monday, Sept. 10, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (7-9c); Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 8 to 9 (7-8c); and Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 8 to 9 (7-8c). NBC just added the Wednesday hour — which is when “The Voice” will compete head-on with “The X Factor.”

“The X Factor” was already scheduled to premiere over two nights: Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 8 to 10 (7-9c), and Thursday, Sept. 13, from 8 to 9.

Head-to-head competition between two similar talent shows is a relative rarity for the networks, which have traditionally tried to avoid such face-offs when making up their schedules. Generally speaking, they’d rather not compete in this way, because such situations tend to split the viewing audience, creating the potential for a dip in viewership for both competing shows.

But in recent seasons, with more prime-time hours devoted to such shows, overlap has become unavoidable in some instances. And in this case, it’s also possible that NBC simply wanted to stick it to “The X Factor,” and also see if “The Voice” can prevail over the Simon Cowell-produced Fox show.
