ABC’s buzzy new drama “Last Resort” doesn’t premiere until September 27, but we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek of the submarine thriller to whet your appetite.
From “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan, the high-concept series about the crew of a nuclear sub that finds refuge on a remote island has drawn comparisons to another mysterious ABC hit — “Lost.”
For Ryan, creating the next “Lost” isn’t his aim. Describing the series as “a show about people in a time of crisis,” and not simply a war story, Ryan cites films like “Casablanca” and “Doctor Zhivago” as influences. “[Those movies] were personal character stories…and that’s what we’re hoping to do in a weekly series,” he says.
At the center of “Last Resort” are Andre Braugher (“Men of a Certain Age“) as Captain Marcus Chaplin, and Scott Speedman (“Felicity“) as XO Sam Kendal. The two have a complicated father-son relationship which gets turned on its head when Chaplin refuses an off-protocol order to strike Pakistan. By doing so, Chaplin endangers his crew, and forever changes the course of their lives as they become stranded on a strange island. The pivotal scene below offers a first look at Chaplin’s refusal to strike and the chaos that his inaction creates.
“Last Resort” premieres on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8/7c on ABC.
