“666 Park Avenue” is a very alluring address that will be tempting you to watch on Sunday nights.
The new supernatural drama from ABC stars Terry O’Quinn of “Lost” fame and “Desperate Housewives” Vanessa Williams as Gavin and Olivia Doran, a mysterious power couple who own a luxury apartment building in Manhattan with a very storied history. Oh, and ghosts. And dragon murals in the basement. And dreams that turn into nightmares.
When a young couple from the Midwest — Henry (Dave Annable) and Jane (Rachael Taylor) — move in to The Drake to takeover as the new managers, they quickly learn their glamorous new address (and bosses) have some very dark secrets and an unsettling reign of power.
“We all want something — it’s the essential truth of who we are,” O’Quinn’s Gavin leers in the pilot episode. “What I do is fulfill needs.”
Of course, it comes at a price. And that’s where the fun comes in.
xfinityTV spoke with O’Quinn for our Fall TV Preview special, where we discussed his devilish new role — and got a surprising answer about his favorite TV show.
This show seems like a juicy follow-up to “Lost” for you.
“I think it might be. I don’t know how to feel yet. I didn’t know how I felt about ‘Lost’ for 2, 3, or 4 episodes. Because when I do work, I don’t go, ‘Wow, I was great in that, so this is going to be fabulous’.”
How is it working with former “Desperate Housewife” Vanessa Williams?
“She’s a doll. She’s real easy to work with. I didn’t know her very well, but she’s a real sweetheart and a real pro, so if I know we’re going to work together that day, I’m happy when I get up in the morning.”
The Drake Hotel and its evil caretaker draws some similarities with “The Shining” and The Overlook Hotel. How spooky will “666” be?
“I think it’s going to be both scary and soapy. It’s a little bit of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and … what was the thing with John Forsythe and Linda…? [xfinity: ‘Dynasty’.] Yeah, ‘Dynasty.’ It’s a little of that and ‘Rosemary’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’.
Sounds like a fabulous recipe.
“Yeah, you know, they have to achieve some kind of delicate balance, and if they can capture an audience, we’re good to go.”
Your character Gavin definitely appears to be The Devil…The Devil in Disguise…or at least on his payroll. What can you tell us about your character.
“I don’t know too much so far, I haven’t assimilated the character yet. I don’t have his whole wardrobe yet, or all his colors. So I’m still a little off-balance. But I’m hopeful. It’s fun to play bad guys.”
Is that what drew you to this show, even though you don’t know exactly who/what you are playing so far?
“I liked the script, and the character, it had potential. I think about a script the way I read a book. You know, I don’t like to go to a movie and then read the book. I want to read the book and have my own imagination, and I want to get a sense of my character on my own. So I’m okay with not knowing everything yet.”
So when you aren’t reading, what are you watching?
“I watch too much sports and nature channels. I made a bargain with a friend. She watched all of the British Open with me in golf. And I watched ‘The Bachelorette’ with her. And I have to say, I was really happy with the guy she picked. I thought that was the right guy.
“And I also like ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ I love the dancing on that. You get these guys that are krumpers on the street and then they’re doing the fox trot or something … I just think it’s amazing. Some of their stories are very moving.”
So you like dancing and your new show’s on ABC, could there ever be any “DWTS” in your future?
“No, no, no. I hope not. If you see me on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ shoot me.”
“666 Park Avenue” premieres Sunday, Sept. 30 at 10/9c on ABC.
