Revolution” creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams dropped by “The Today Show” Friday morning to explain his new show, something the master of complicated mystery dramas is used to doing by now.

“It’s a great ‘what if’ story,” Abrams says. “It’s a grand, romantic adventure, but it really asks a great ‘what if’ — what if everything [the power] went out, how would we survive?”

Like without cell phones and television! That’s a frightening world to imagine indeed, and that’s before you even begin to battle the power-hungry bad guys.

“The show does a really cool thing… it jumps 15 years ahead to tell the story of where we would be, and then over time, in flashbacks, we’ll get to see what went on in the interim.” Watch the Interview Above.

And when Savannah Guthrie asked what has become a familiar question about this style of show — a serialized drama with an over-arching mystery — do the writers know where it’s going and how it will end — Abrams gave a refreshingly honest answer.

“The truth is there are some mysteries … but we do know why the power went out, we do know the big stories … but it won’t quite be that type of show.”

“I think anyone who says at the beginning of a series ‘I know how it ends’ isn’t being true,” Abrams added. “Because the truth is, you have to know and listen to the show as it goes … part of it is evolving.”

“Revolution” premieres Monday, Sept. 17 at 10/9c on NBC.
