Final Four: ‘American Idol’ Judge Lineup Set with Urban, Minaj

You can now rest easy, America — “American Idol” has settled on its lineup of judges for next season.

Fox made the announcement on Sunday — following former judge Jennifer Lopez’s appearance Friday on Katie Couric’s new talk show, where Lopez seemed to “announce” that Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj had signed on to join the long-running talent series as judges.

Fox made it official with its Sunday announcement: Urban, the country star who is married to Nicole Kidman, and R&B star Minaj will join the judges’ panel, replacing Lopez and Steven Tyler. The new additions mean the show’s four-member panel is now set, with Minaj and Urban set to join returning judge Randy Jackson — sole surviving judge from “Idol’s” original season — and incoming judge Mariah Carey.

This show’s search for new judges, which commenced shortly after last season ended and both Lopez and Tyler announced their intentions to bow out of the show, was the most-watched TV story of the summer. Minaj and Urban were just two of the names mentioned who were reportedly being considered for the two open posts. The others included Nick Jonas (of the Jonas brothers), rapper/producer Pharrell Williams and even Aretha Franklin.

Season 12 of “American Idol” will start, as usual, in January, Fox said.
