The buzziest contestant to land on a team on last night’s episode of “The Voice” says she owes her journey to the blind auditions to last year’s runner-up, Juliet Simms. Cassadee Pope, the former frontwoman of the Florida-based band Hey Monday said Juliet’s success last season encouraged her to take her own stab at “The Voice.” Juliet was herself a lead singer in the band Automatic Loveletter.
“Being the frontwoman of a band, she did so well and I thought maybe I had a shot,” said Cassadee in a phone conference today.
The two have been friends since they toured together in 2010. But Cassadee has followed Juliet since even before then. “Her band Automatic Loveletter has been around a long time before my band even formed,” said Cassadee.
When Cassadee moved to Los Angeles last October, she and Juliet reconnected. Soon after, Cassadee watched her friend rise to fame on “The Voice,” as a member of Cee Lo Green’s team. Juliet made it to the finals, losing to Jermaine Paul. When Cassadee decided to audition for Season 3, Juliet was supportive. “She’s been really encouraging and yeah, she’s been awesome,” said Cassadee.
Cassadee’s own band is on hiatus while the members each pursue their own projects. She said after last night’s appearance on “The Voice,” when all four judges turned their chairs for her, her bandmates reached out to express their support. “They know this is something I’ve been working towards,” she said. “Working toward the next level in my career.” Cassadee chose to work with Blake Shelton.
Cassadee said her experience touring with Hey Monday has helped her in her solo journey. “It helped me to know how important it is to stay on top of social media during this time, and it’s helped me seem more comfortable on stage,” said Cassadee. “It’s definitely a different experience because I’m not with my band anymore…but it was still something I felt very comfortable doing.”
The scale of success, however, is vastly different. About the number of new fans Cassadee has picked up in one night, Cassadee said, “My fan base was probably 10 percent of that number.”
