Perhaps one of pop culture’s most infamous moments in recent years was when current “X Factor” judge Britney Spears shaved her head as the paparazzi looked on back in 2007 in a bizarre move given the singer’s famed blond locks.
Now Sam Lufti, who says he was Britney’s manager at the time of the event, is suing the singer, and his lawyer told the court on Thursday that the head shaving episode was done because Britney was addicted to speed. He claims that she was afraid that a judge would order drug testing (via hair follicles) on her and cause her to lose custody of her kids to ex-hubby Kevin Federline, according to TMZ.
Lufti is also suing Britney’s parents Jamie and Lynne Spears for libel over comments that Lynne made in her autobiography.
“My client was made a scapegoat for the drug abuse and erratic behavior of Britney Spears,” Lutfi’s lawyer said in his opening statement, according to E! News. “She liked to use amphetamines—speed or uppers. She liked to take that drug. And most of the things that went wrong were related to that drug.”
He also told the jury that Britney took a huge amount of amphetamines the night she was strapped to a stretcher and placed on a 5150 hold on January 28, 2008. He said she took 6 to 8 pills early in the day, with several more later on, which caused her to lose control.
The attorney said in court that his client only acted as a concerned friend to Spears who “worked very hard to keep Britney Spears off drugs” before the 2008 incident led to her father to create a conservatorship for her estate and pushed Lutfi out of her life with a restraining order.
