Showtime has ordered a third season of its captivating CIA drama “Homeland,” the cable network announced Monday.
Riding high after sweeping the Emmys, “Homeland” will be back for Season 3 with an order of 12 new episodes. Production on the third season will begin in spring 2013.
Sunday night’s new episode was its highest rated yet with 1.75 million viewers in the 10 p.m. hour. “Homeland’s” Season 2 premiere, which debuted Sept. 30 and is available below, was up 60% over its Season 1 premiere, with the Season 2 premiere week averaging 5.2 million viewers across platforms (Live +7, DVR and On Demand).
The first stellar season of “Homeland” pulled off a stealth maneuver — capturing six Emmy statues this year, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Lead Actress for Claire Danes and Outstanding Lead Actor for Damian Lewis.
“The Emmy wins for ‘Homeland’ have certainly set the stage for a great second season,” said David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks. “The writers, cast and crew of ‘Homeland’ continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride, growing audiences week after week. We can’t wait for our viewers to experience what unfolds through the rest of season two. Our partners at Fox 21 have been tremendous, and we are thrilled to begin the planning for ‘Homeland’s third season.”
