‘The Good Wife’: Could a Lie Destroy Peter’s Campaign?

Julianna Margulies in "The Good Wife" (CBS)

On Sunday’s episode of “The Good Wife,” Eli (Alan Cumming) is on as mission to stop the press from reporting on the campaign worker, Indira, who falsely claims she slept with Peter (Chris Noth). Peter is surprised that Eli has Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) on the case. (She seems to have forgotten all about her husband in this episode.) Alicia (Julianna Margulies) tells the press that she certainly did not tell India that she and Peter had an open marriage. Eli tells Kalinda he thinks he was in the room adjoining Peter’s on the night they allegedly had sex in the hotel. A hotel employee says guests could not open the doors between rooms. But Peter was on a concierge floor that required a special concierge key. Kalinda asks Indira how she got the concierge key. Her story falls apart because, of course, she did not have one. It seems that the scandal has been contained until Eli gets a call from a blogger who says that he is going to publish the story in an hour.

Jackie (Mary Beth Peil), fresh out of the hospital and allegedly recovered from her stroke, makes a speech at a fundraising lunch in which she claims women throw themselves at Peter. A campaign staffer alerts Eli, who calls her and tells her to stop talking, She hangs up on him. Eli takes her off high profile speaking duty. She has to speak at a senior center. But she has trouble speaking  and hallucinates that she sees bugs. She sees another bug in her wine glass at a campaign party. Is it her stroke, general nuttiness or as big of a red herring as Lockhart-Gardner’s computer problems were last season?

Maddie (Maura Tierney)  asks Eli about the rumors about Petr. He assures her Peter has done nothing wrong. She doesn’t seem to buy it. So Eli wants Alicia to tell her over drinks. Alicia gets wasted like she always does with Kalinda. Maddie keeps plying her with drinks, saying that they’re free because she’s rich. Alicia asks why Maddie wants to be her friend. Then she tells her that she was grilled by reporters but the story is false. Maddie asks her if Eli told her to mention this. She acknowledges that he did. Maddie pulls out her credit card and the evening. This scene was so weird. Watch it and see if you can figure out whether Maddie leaked the story to the blog, has a crush on Alicia, or is just hurt that Alicia is mixing politics and friendships.

In the dull case of the week, Lockhart-Gardern represents the parents of college student who died during a water polo hazing incident in a lawsuit against the university. The opposing council offers the bizarre defense that the university is not liable because the death was hate crime. First he tries to claim it’s because the victim was gay. He wasn’t. Then he claims it was because he was effeminate. Then he argues that it was black on black hate crime, before Lockhart Gardner proves that it was really about a rivalry between two fraternities. The university settles for 6 million, going a long way toward easing the firms financial problems.

Clark (Nathan Lane)  wants Will (Josh Charles) and Diane (Christine Branaski) to share an office. Diane refuses. So Clark assigns Cary (Matt Czuchry) and Alicia to share, which is truly an excellent idea.
