‘The Voice’: Who Tumbled in Latest Battle Rounds?

Before the presidential candidates went into the ring for battle, so did 12 contestants on “The Voice.” In Monday’s penultimate battle round episode, a quick hour featured three duets, while another three got a quick recap. By the end, we had one steal, and only three spots and one steal left to fill Tuesday.

We started off the night with a battle from Cee Lo Green’s team: Hurricane Katrina survivor (and ew, why does Carson keep referring to her only as that?) Alexis Marceaux and last year’s reject returnee Daniel Rosa.

The two were paired up on Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me,” and the main challenge for Daniel was that he didn’t believe in himself on the high notes; for Alexis, it was that as a classically trained singer, she couldn’t let loose.

Cee Lo is probably the most heartwarming, comforting, inspiring coach. Daniel tried to avoid the high notes, saying he didn’t want to risk sounding bad. “What are you willing to risk?” Cee Lo asked him. “I don’t know how to coach anyone to play it safe.”

Sounds like it worked. Daniel didn’t hit all his notes, but he certainly tried. And Alexis let go a bit, maybe not enough, but she sounded great. Cee Lo thought they both did well, but about Daniel, he said “His voice affects me, it hurts me in such a good way.”

“I’m not classically trained, but I am flawed in a very fantastic way,” Cee Lo said, before choosing Daniel as the winner of the round.

Alexis would have been a good match for Blake Shelton, but he didn’t move on his steal, and so it was bye-bye to her.

Next up was Team Adam Levine’s Brandon Mahone, the high schooler who sings like he’s in the Temptations, and Nicole Nelson, the Vermont hippie who got four chairs to turn on “Hallelujah.” Adam gave them “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which was a great pick for Nicole, except that he told Nicole not to sing her guts out on it like she could totally do amazingly, and instead to be restrained.

I think it was a tactic to try to help Brandon not be so freaking scared of Nicole, and maybe it worked a little, because Brandon seemed a little less scared by the end of the battle. But Adam still chose Nicole. And crazily, again, Blake didn’t steal him.

Nevermind Christina Aguilera making a steal. She’s said outright she’s only trying to collect pop girls on her team, and isn’t bothering with anyone else.

In a quick fast-forward, we learned that Adam chose wedding singer Lauren Allred over Brian Scartocci, and rocker Joe Kirkland over Samuel Moulton. Blake picked Hey Monday frontwoman Cassadee Pope over Ryan Jirovec.

Finally, Team Christina. She pitted 15-year-old Marissa Ann against Devyn Deloera, the girl that auditioned with “What a Girl Wants.” Christina gave them “Free Your Mind” and told them to growl and scream and sing all loud and crazy, like she did as an example. Honestly, I think sometimes I watch this show just for the moments when Christina opens her mouth and some earth-shaking note comes out of there, but in the space of like, a really tiny room. It’s kind of insane.

In Marissa and Devyn’s hands, however, that encouragement led to a kind of crazy screaming match, although Christina seemed pleased with it all. She chose Devyn, which made sense considering she had just a bit more experience.

But then inexplicably, Blake used his last save on Marissa Ann. I mean, she was good and all, but what is he doing collecting a pop girl like that, when he could have had interesting Alexis Marceaux or soulful Brandon Mahone earlier in the show? I think it was just “steal” anxiety…worried that no one else good would come along and trying to use it up. Oh, Blake…

That leaves us with only one steal left—Christina’s, which she’ll have to use tomorrow night. Also Blake, Cee Lo and Christina each still have one slot to fill, while Team Adam is done. Looks like they saved some interesting folks for tomorrow, like four-chair-spin auditioner Avery Wilson, Disney star Jordan Pruitt, and 16-year-old with a Mohawk Michaela Paige.
