The success of PBS’ hit series “Downton Abbey” helped made actor Dan Stevens, who plays the heir of the Downton estate Matthew Crawley, an international star. Now, the actor is hinting that he may leave the show for a new acting challenge.
The Daily Mail reports that Stevens may not return for the fourth season of the show. The actor has apparently been bitten by the Broadway bug as he is now appearing in the stage show “The Heiress” on the Great White Way. Apparently, he likes it so much, he is considering sticking around for a while.
“New York for me is going to be one big adventure,” Stevens said in the article. “I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months. I don’t know if I will be returning to ‘Downton.’”
If Stevens does leave the series, that would, of course, create a major hole in the ongoing storyline of the show.
But before “Downton” fans get themselves worked up, series creator Julian Fellowes told TVLine over the summer that Stevens is only doing a limited run on Broadway and that they expected him back. So there is still hope.
“Downton Abbey” Season 3 premieres stateside in early 2013.
