Sabrina Bryan stunned “Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars” viewers on Monday night when she revealed during rehearsal footage that her dance would be about a former relationship with a drug addict.
The wholesome Cheetah Girl truly lived up to the show’s “country week” theme as she spilled her guts to partner Louis Van Amstel about how her former boyfriend had been addicted to drugs and she hadn’t been able to help him at the time. Sabrina broke down in tears during practice, but she and Louis fashioned a rumba around the relationship woe and received a perfect score of 30 for the emotional performance. The verdict made the dance pair cry on camera.
And after the show, Sabrina elaborated to reporters that her dance “was more of a celebration of working through an obstacle for me and going through such a tragic situation with my ex-boyfriend. For me, it was a representation of how amazing and how grateful I feel to be at the place I am now, five years later, back on [DWTS].
“It was incredible. This dance was something that I was so nervous to do and I didn’t know what really they were going to add into the [behind the scenes footage]. I told them about my own personal experience and it’s hard to let things out there for people to judge.”
But the Cheetah Girl also said that happily, her ex-boyfriend is no longer addicted to drugs. “He will always be somebody I really care about but he’s [now] married and is five years sober, he has a baby and he has really pulled himself together, which is awesome,” she said. “I’m really proud of him and I know he supports me and everything and I’ve moved on to an incredible relationship [myself]. That’s kind of what the storyline was—it wasn’t necessarily what I went through in that relationship but what happened to me after and the relationship I’m in now, the giving and the taking and wanting to love again but being too scared and finally giving in–and my boyfriend right now is incredible.”
Sabrina said she gave a head’s up to her former boyfriend before Monday’s show: “I texted him to let him know I was telling the story. I know he will be okay with it because one of his main goals now is to help other addicts get to a better place.”
Sabrina’s current boyfriend, whom she also didn’t name, was in the audience Monday night when she performed to the country song “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. “He was right behind a post,” she smiled. “It was a little bit hard. It felt like a huge risk to put my emotions out there.”
But Sabrina and Louis scored big, as only Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff also got the perfect 30 score on Monday.
Sabrina brought skillful moves to the dance as well as emotion. She said of her unique version of the splits, “Louis had an incredible partner he competed with. That split thing is something they’re known for and no one’s ever done it on this show and I was so nervous to mess that up so to get those amazing scores and such great feedback from not just the judges but the cast—when I went up to the skybox, it was like, ‘I feel so incredibly lucky to be here! ‘”
