After several pre-recorded rounds of elimination on “The Voice,” we have finally made it live—although we are still in a “playoff” round, meaning the audience votes off two singers per team before we get to the REAL competition.
The whole shebang was pitted as perfect Election Eve fodder. Adam Levine put it plainly: “America, it’s time for you to vote.”
Last night, Teams Adam and Blake performed, and the biggest surprises weren’t in the performances but in a couple of wardrobe choices.
First—Cee Lo Green jazzed up his white satin pajama look by adding ruffles and a curly black wig. He looked like a count, or the lost duke on “Downton Abbey.”
Second—Liz Davis, Blake Shelton’s one surviving country singer, wore a dress. Usually seen in short-shorts (which she was during the opening group sing), Liz finally broke the streak and wore a long, silvery evening gown. It was so much easier to take her seriously.
Third—Melanie Martinez took off giant red Minnie Mouse bow—in favor of a giant beige bow. Yay?

Best performances of the night came from Bryan Keith, who, with “Iris,” got the interesting compliment from Blake that he sounded like Neil Diamond. Mohawk punk girl Michaela Paige is so much more mature and commanding than 16-year-olds generally are on these shows and sounded incredible on Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks.” Terry McDermott singing Journey was such a perfect match, and he’s proving himself to be the best arena rocker the ‘80s never had (too bad it’s the ‘10s). And Amanda Brown hit the craziest note I’ve ever heard on this show at the end of “Dream On”—surely that note alone will keep her in play.

Who should go home? Team Blake: Cassadee Pope was more than underwhelming. Julio Cesar Castillo has been on thin ice these last couple weeks, although the mariachi singer saved himself by finally singing mariachi, so even though Terry did great, I’m going to say his style is just a bit too outdated for people.
Team Adam: Loren Allred has had minimal screen time to connect to voters compared to other contestants, and even her coach said the dreadful words—“I hope there will be a next time.” Melanie Martinez’s breathiness is getting to be annoying, I think, even to the other coaches; Christina Aguilera had a really hard time forming a compliment.
