“Army Wives” is no stranger to casualties, but the upcoming season will feature a major death, as producers make a dramatic move to reboot the Lifetime series.
Series star Kim Delaney will not be returning to “Army Wives” after six seasons on the show. Her character Claudia Joy, who has been traveling overseas, will be killed off in the Season 7 premiere, producers have confirmed.
“The first two [episodes] will be very emotional, and it will confirm that Claudia Joy is no longer among the living,” executive producer Jeff Melvoin tells TV Line. “It’s been very wrenching for us to write, and I think it will be very wrenching for the audience to go through.”
“Kim and Claudia Joy have been the rock upon which we based the show,” he adds. “But we [have to] continue to move forward and keep the show fresh and unpredictable.”
The tragedy of losing Claudia Joy will serve as the catalyst to reboot the series for 2013. While the “Wive” say goodbye to one original cast member, another one will be back: Sally Pressman, who plays Roxy, is returning, however, not as a series regular. The actress’s real-life pregnancy will keep her MIA from the first few episodes, says TV Line.
Series regulars Catherine Bell, Wendy Davis, Alyssa Diaz, Kelli Williams, J.J. Soria and Terry Serpico all will be returning, along with Claudia Joy’s widower Michael (Brian McNamara), according to TV Line. They also report that three new characters will be introduced next season: “an 18-year-old farm girl from Illinois, an African-American mother of three, and a drop-dead gorgeous bad girl named Maggie who is a member of the Airborne Division.”
Season 7 of “Army Wives” is slated to return in mid-2013 on Lifetime.
