Christina Aguilera lost her last contestant on “The Voice” tonight, leaving the coach out of commission with at least another three weeks of completion to go.
Dez Duron and Team Cee Lo’s Cody Belew both got the boot tonight, which means all the remaining coaches now have two players each left in the game.
With Team Xtina dropping like flies week after week, Christina must have mentally prepared herself for this very possibility. It felt like she was expecting to lose Dez, talking about his time on the show in past tense long before the elimination. Carson Daly asked Christina what would happen to Dez if he were eliminated tonight, and she didn’t seem to be speaking in fully hypothetical terms when she said he will be just fine.
Cody, too, seemed to have a hunch tonight was his last night. Speaking briefly before the results, he stood by his flashy showman performances and affirmed his decision to show America his true self.
The show was chock full of performances and videos and just plain talking. The first safety announcement, Cassadee Pope, didn’t come until 15 minutes in, and we didn’t get another one, Amanda Brown, for another quarter-hour. Fifteen more minutes and we found out Melanie Martinez was good to go. Seven minutes later, Nicholas David moved on for another week. (Are you keeping track? We’re now at 8:52.)
Performances began with a duet of Amanda and Trevin on “Marry the Night.” Then, wonderfully, a duet of Cee Lo and Kermit the Frog on “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” that featured cameos from all the Muppets that are not currently involved in a sex scandal. Terry, Nicholas, Cody and Melanie collaborated on a cutesy “Rhythm of Love” by Plain White T’s. And finally, Cassadee and Dez duetted with “Hate That I Love You,” a song that, considering Rihanna’s history, just always sounds a little bit like an endorsement of domestic violence, but whatever.
Videos were a montage of folks talking about backstage rituals. I feel honored to now have the knowledge that Blake Shelton watches “Golden Girls” backstage. Then Team Cee Lo seasons one through three reunited at a coffeeshop, then performed in Vegas with the Muppets. And then the remaining contestants went to Carson Daly’s radio station, where they learned a little bit about marketing.
Finally, with one minute left of airtime, Terry McDermott and Trevin Hunte were sent to safety, leaving Cody and Dez behind.
In the split-second we got to see of Christina, smushed over the credits, she looked none too happy.
