A year after defending her choice of The Kardashians as part of her list of 2011’s “Most Fascinating People,” Barbara Walters is on the defensive once again for one of her selections.
“A lot of people will say, ‘For heaven’s sake, this is ridiculous, this is a child at 5 or 6 years old entering beauty contests,'” she told the magazine. “But the relationship between Alana and her mother — that’s the story, the two of them. It’s very touching.”
Walters noted that in addition to the show becoming a pop culture phenomenon, the show was really about family values.
“It’s a love story,” Walters told the magazine about the relationship between Alana and her mother, June, on TLC’s hit show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” “It’s a very sweet, loving story.”
Walters does admit that the list she compiled contains a bizarre mixture of people with names that range from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to boyband One Direction to “Fifty Shades of Grey” author E.L. James.
“The fact that we have a show with Hillary Clinton, Chris Christie and Honey Boo Boo . . . that is varied to say the least.”
Walters’ ABC special will air on December 12 at 9:30 p.m. EST.
