“The opening pages of Ayana’s debut took my breath away,” said Winfrey, “I can’t remember when I read anything that moved me in quite this way, besides the work of Toni Morrison.”
Hailed as an “extraordinary” debut, Mathis’ novel tells the tale of the children of the Great Migration through the trials of an indomitable teen heroine named Hattie and her unforgettable family, according to press materials.
An interview with the author will air Feb. 3 on Oprah’s OWN Channel.
