CNN’s new incoming president is reportedly interested in luring ABC’s Chris Cuomo for a high-profile anchor role.
The newsman is reportedly high on the list of possible candidates new CNN President Jeff Zucker is eyeing for a key role at CNN — an anchor who would be positioned as a “centerpiece” of the news channel, The New York Post reported this week here.
“Jeff’s still looking for an anchor he can basically make the centerpiece of the network,” says a source who isn’t named in the story. The Post story comes on the heels of similar speculation that Zucker — who was executive producer of NBC’s “Today” show in its heyday and then president of NBC Universal — is also interested in bringing Ann Curry into CNN (though her current contract tying her to NBC may not be able to be broken).
In addition, Zucker, who may or may not yet have officially assumed his new job, has already lured political correspondent Jake Tapper from ABC to CNN, where Tapper will be CNN’s chief Washington correspondent and a daytime news anchor.
Our take: Cuomo would be a great get for CNN, but the question is: Would it be the right move for him, since ABC News is doing well, while CNN is struggling? And, if Zucker is going around eyeing various news talent for this “centerpiece” anchor role, where does that leave Anderson Cooper? Stay tuned.
