Co-Hosts Fey, Poehler Taking Un-Gervais Approach to ‘Globes’ Role

“Golden Globe Awards” co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler don’t seem eager to make the kind of splash Ricky Gervais made when he hosted the annual awards show on NBC for three consecutive years.

Gervais made headlines — including many negative ones — for the razor sharpness of his comedy, with barbed comments aimed at the likes of Madonna, Johnny Depp and Colin Firth (the year Firth’s movie, “The King’s Speech,” was a Golden Globe nominee).

Nevertheless, Gervais helped boost the telecast’s ratings. And he was subsequently invited back to host it for two additional years (he was the “Golden Globes” host in 2010, 2011 and 2012).

But Fey and Poehler seem to be taking a much different attitude toward their roles on the show as they prepare to co-host this year’s “70th Annual Golden Globe Awards,” airing Sunday night at 8/7c on NBC.

“I think one thing about the show — because it’s a fun, kind of sloppy night — [is that] it’s not really about the host giving any kind of big comedy performance,” Fey said when asked in a conference call with reporters about Gervais. Her answer seemed to fly in the face of the standard set by Gervais, who was the first “Golden Globes” host since 1995.

“We just sort of feel like our job is to keep things moving,” Fey said. “And also to try to help get the stars more liquored up so hopefully someone’s boob will fall out of a dress!” she joked. Alcohol has been said to play a role in the “Golden Globes” because the event is styled as a vast banquet, with the stars and other Hollywood luminaries seated at round banquet tables partaking of food and drink (especially the latter).

“It’s kind of like hosting a party,” she said. “I don’t really think of it as a place to, like, change the face of comedy. I think the luckiest we could get would be for something interesting and spontaneous to happen.”

One thing that wasn’t spontaneous: The choice of Fey and Poehler as co-hosts on this NBC telecast. They’re both NBC sitcom stars (of “30 Rock” and “Parks and Recreation,” respectively), so it makes perfect sense.

“The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards” air Sunday night (Jan. 13) from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. (7-10c) on NBC.
