Update: Super Bowl XLVII Falls Short of Ratings Record

The lights went out in the Superdome but the Super Bowl lit up the ratings, giving CBS the thrill of victory Sunday night.

This year’s Super Bowl was watched by 108.41 million viewers, making it the third most-watched program in history.

That’s huge, of course, but those final numbers mean Super Bowl XLVII did not break a viewership record, as previously thought after the early overnight numbers came out Monday morning.

The championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers was down three percent from last year’s record-breaking match-up between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

The record miss could be attributed to the blackout that caused a 34-minute delay of game, during which ratings for the telecast reportedly dipped as some viewers tuned in to other programming until the lights came back on in the stadium and the game resumed.

CBS’s post-Super Bowl episode of “Elementary” was also likely hurt by the power outage, falling way short in the ratings compared to last year’s airing of “The Voice” in the same coveted time slot.

Sunday night’s Super Bowl in New Orleans went from a near-blowout to a wild thriller when, after getting crushed by the Ravens for the entire first half, the 49ers made an electrifying surge and nearly won the game. But in the end, it was the Ravens who came out on top with a big 34-31 win.
