Maher Vs. Trump: War of Words Continues on ‘Conan,’ Twitter

Bill Maher took his battle against Donald Trump to Conan O’Brien’s TBS late-night show, while Trump fired his own salvos at Maher on Twitter.

The escalation (or continuation) of hostilities between the host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the star of “The Apprentice” on NBC took place Tuesday.

On “Conan,” it was O’Brien who raised the subject of Trump and the lawsuit The Donald has filed against Maher that seems aimed at forcing Maher to make good on a challenge he proposed as a joke on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” early last month.

That was the same evening that Maher likened Trump to an orangutan — based on the similarity, in Maher’s opinion, of Trump’s orange-hued hair and the fur of the great primate. The orangutan comparison was the jumping-off point for the challenge Maher then issued. In a spoof of Trump’s famous offer last year to President Obama that Trump would donate $5 million to a charity of the president’s choice if the president would release his birth certificate to him, Maher jokingly offered to pay $5 million to a charity of Trump’s choice is Trump can prove he’s not the off-spring of an orangutan.

The proposal was a joke, but Trump took it so seriously that he had his attorney send a copy of Trump’s birth certificate to Maher — proving his “human” origins. Then, last week, Trump had his attorney filed the lawsuit against Maher.

On the “Conan” show, Maher again called Trump a “rich idiot” who is using the court system as “a toy” to make “collections,” according to this story on that also has video of the Maher appearance on the O’Brien show.

“He thinks a joke on a late-night talk show is a binding legal agreement,” Maher told O’Brien, reiterating a point Maher made last week on his own show, HBO’s “Real Time.” “And in the world of late-night comedy, there are no binding agreements. You of all people should know this!” Maher joked, referring to O’Brien losing his job at NBC’s “Tonight Show.”

Maher then made a point about comedy, saying that making fun of Trump was like making fun of any “fictional” character on TV. “He’s not even a real person,” Maher said. “[He’s like] a pop reference from the ’80s. It’s like having a spat with J.R. Ewing!”

“He tweets about me constantly,” Maher said — which happens to be true, at least recently.

In the last day or so, Trump has issued several tweets about Maher, including these gems: “When will people realize that @billmaher is not an intellectual, but actually a rather dumb guy—just look at his past,” and “I went to Wharton, made over $8 billion, employ thousands of people & get insulted by morons who can’t get enough of me on twitter…!”

Conan asked Maher why he thinks Trump filed this lawsuit. Maher’s answer: “How do I know what’s in this man’s head? It’s like you took Lenny from ‘Of Mice and Men’ and made him a billionaire!” Lenny, of course, was the mentally challenged character in the famed novel by John Steinbeck.

Where this feud goes from here is anybody’s guess.
