Not even Sofia Vergara is immune to the eyes of the law. Appearing on Thursday’s special Valentine’s Day episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the “Modern Family” star detailed a run-in with Mexican police on the same day that her boyfriend Nick Loeb popped the question at the Chichén-Itzá pyramids last summer.
Vergara told Ellen DeGeneres that she had taken a group of friends to the Yucatán site as part of a “tourist trip” for her 40th birthday on July 10, 2012.
At her boyfriend’s request, she climbed to the top of the roped-off “pyramid” — a word the Colombian actress hilariously struggled to pronounce — to take a photo.
“So he was like, let’s go take a picture up there,” Vergara explained as a video of their ascent played. Unbeknownst to her, Loeb was about to propose. (She accepted.)
As they descended, several police officers appeared. “They’re going to try to arrest us,” Vergara explained.
In her defense, Apparently Loeb had tricked her into climbing by saying that they were allowed to cross the off-limits section. “He had said he had gotten permission,” Vergara insisted. “I swear to God he said he had gotten permission to go up there and take a picture. So I said, ‘OK, let’s go.’ So I went up, he took the ring out there. I made sure I like it.”
And like it she did, as she flashed her huge diamond for the camera.
“I like it, I put it on immediately and I said yes,” she admitted. “And I checked,” she addded, drawing laughs from the audience as she bit into it to prove it was real.
“But then when we came down they want to arrest us because there were some nationals,” she said, searching for the right word as DeGeneres laughed. “No…local people got really upset and they thought I was [taking] advantage of the situation, but it was not true.”
As they broke for commercial, Vergara jokingly pleaded, “Can I please have a translator?”
